CPS Energy begins construction on a 120-megawatt battery energy storage system in San Antonio as Texas drives a national surge in utility-scale storage installations.
Texas continues to lead the nation in energy storage expansion, with the state accounting for 27% of nationwide growth in utility-scale battery installations during the first quarter of 2026. This surge is part of a broader national trend that saw enough capacity added in the first four months of the year to deliver 10 gigawatts of energy over one hour, representing a 32% increase over 2025 levels. Texas currently ties with California at 17 gigawatts of total storage capacity.
Locally, CPS Energy has launched a new 120-megawatt battery storage project on the Southeast Side of San Antonio in partnership with OCI Energy. The utility, which expects peak demand to quadruple as data centers expand in the region, is actively building out its storage portfolio to enhance grid reliability and manage rising energy costs.
