Tampa International Airport explores an air mobility facility near Westshore to connect travelers via electric air taxis, rail, and bus transit.
Tampa International Airport is planning an air mobility facility designed to integrate electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft with existing transit options, including rail, bus lines, and automated people movers. The proposed hub, which would be linked to the airport’s SkyConnect system, aims to provide connectivity between the airport, Westshore, and downtown Tampa. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to accommodate projected growth in annual passenger traffic, which is expected to rise from 26 million to roughly 36 million travelers over the next decade.
Simultaneously, the airport is progressing on the construction of Airside D, a 600,000-square-foot international terminal currently scheduled to open in 2029. The $1.5 billion terminal project is being financed through airport revenues and bonds. Airport leadership is also evaluating potential regional transit integrations, including connections to St. Petersburg and the proposed Tampa Bay Rays stadium district, positioning the airport infrastructure as a central component of the region's long-term economic and transit development.
