Pennrose and the Hyde Square Task Force have broken ground on the 71,000-square-foot redevelopment of the historic Blessed Sacrament Church in Boston.
Pennrose and the Hyde Square Task Force have officially broken ground on the redevelopment of the historic 1913 Blessed Sacrament Church in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The project will transform the long-vacant 71,000-square-foot site into a mixed-use community, featuring 55 affordable apartment units and a multipurpose performance space within the building’s original nave. The residences will serve households earning between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income, with six units specifically designated for formerly homeless residents.
Designed by DiMella Shaffer, the development focuses on historic preservation by repurposing the existing structure’s façade and cupola. The project is expected to reach completion by the end of 2027 and serves as a key anchor for the city’s Latin Quarter District. Funding for the redevelopment includes Low-Income Housing Tax Credit equity, construction debt provided by MassDevelopment and Citizens Bank, and additional support from various state and federal housing agencies. Pennrose Management Company is slated to provide property management services upon completion.
