Hyundai Translead Investing $450M in Two-Facility Will County Manufacturing Expansion

Hyundai Translead plans a $450 million trailer manufacturing expansion across two facilities in Will County, creating nearly 2,500 jobs.

By Colin Percy · May 26, 2026

Hyundai Translead, the North American arm of the South Korean automotive firm, has committed to a $450 million investment in Will County. The project spans two facilities, including the site formerly occupied by Lion Electric, and is expected to generate nearly 2,500 full-time jobs. This move highlights a broader structural trend of manufacturing reshoring in the Chicago region, which continues to leverage its multimodal infrastructure, inland port access in Joliet and Elwood, and a deep, skilled labor pool.

Industry experts note that while Illinois faces competitive challenges—specifically concerning property taxes, corporate income tax rates, and power availability—the region remains a dominant manufacturing hub. Developers like Becknell Industrial and Stream Realty Partners are increasingly focused on power capacity as a critical site-selection factor. Despite regional friction, the Chicago market reported nearly 10 million square feet of new industrial leasing in the first quarter of 2026, supported by federal and state efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing and workforce training.
