Chicago City Council approved a package of development measures including a 64-unit supportive housing project and the $500M first phase of the 1901 Project.
The Chicago City Council has greenlit several significant housing and development initiatives. Among these is a 64-unit affordable housing development at 3959 N. Lincoln Ave. designed for survivors of gender-based violence. The project, which utilizes $11.5 million in city financing alongside tax credits and vouchers, involves the adaptive reuse of a former Fifth Third Bank building and a new addition. Additionally, the Council approved a City Lots for Working Families initiative, authorizing the sale of 14 city-owned lots to Sunshine Management for the construction of residential two- and three-flat buildings.
The city also cleared major commercial and historic projects, most notably a $500 million, 12.3-acre mixed-use development known as the 1901 Project near the United Center. The first phase of this site will feature a 6,000-seat music hall, hotel, retail, and parking. Other approved actions include $132.4 million in renovations and residential conversions for the 44-story office building at 30 N. LaSalle St., a $12.8 million expansion for the South Side Community Art Center, and landmark designations for several historic structures, including St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and portions of the DePaul University campus.
