Major retailers including a Walmart-anchored center, a new Target, and a recently opened Costco are driving a commercial retail surge along the Highway 29 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard corridor.
The intersection of Highway 29 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard, spanning Liberty Hill, Leander, and Georgetown, is transitioning into a self-contained retail hub as commercial development attempts to keep pace with a recent housing boom. Notable projects include the under-construction Santa Rita Ranch Center, which will be anchored by a Walmart, as well as a new Target at the intersection of Highway 29 and US 183. A Costco location has also recently opened in the immediate area to serve the rapidly expanding local population.
Local officials note that these commercial projects are vital for diversifying local economies and balancing tax burdens, as residential growth alone has strained infrastructure. Despite the commercial influx, housing development continues, with major builders such as Perry Homes, Pulte Homes, Highland Homes, and Lennar remaining active. The Santa Rita Ranch master-planned community has already seen approximately 5,000 homes built and remains less than 50% complete, having recorded 483 new home sales in 2025.
