SCHAUM Architects Completes Adaptive Reuse of Houston Garage into Camaraderie Restaurant

SCHAUM Architects completes the adaptive reuse of a former Houston garage into Camaraderie, a new chef-owned restaurant.

By Colin Percy · Mar 17, 2026

SCHAUM Architects has completed the transformation of a former residential garage and woodshop in the Houston Heights neighborhood into Camaraderie, a culinary destination for chef Shawn Gawle. The project involved a resource-efficient adaptive reuse of the existing structure located along 11th Street, preserving the original corrugated metal shell while adding a covered patio. To maintain the dining room's ceiling height, the design team installed a mechanical loft above the kitchen area to house the building's HVAC system.

The interior features birch paneling, custom millwork planters for flexible storage, and integrated lighting to create an intimate atmosphere. The floor plan utilizes a series of walls to organize dining, lounge, and kitchen areas, allowing for visual transparency between the prep spaces and the guests. The project was developed in partnership with ReVive Development and involved structural engineering by H2B Engineering and MEP design by GK Engineers.
