Community members in Sarcoxie are organizing to oppose a proposed hyperscale data center park and 2,000-acre solar farm in Jasper and Lawrence counties.
Geronimo Power is planning a large-scale development in rural eastern Jasper County and Lawrence County, north of Sarcoxie, that includes a hyperscale data center park and a 2,000-acre solar and battery storage facility. The energy project, which would span 1,360 acres in Jasper County and 640 acres in Lawrence County, is expected to generate 150 megawatts of power to support the data center facilities.
Local residents, led by organizer Rhys Hine, are holding informational meetings to voice concerns regarding property values, potential health impacts, and the preservation of the area's rural character. Opponents are currently exploring whether Jasper County’s status as a Class 1 county allows for the implementation of local ordinances to regulate the development’s impact on public health.
