Google announces a $15 billion investment in Missouri, featuring a new data center in New Florence and expanded workforce development and energy affordability programs.
Google has announced a $15 billion investment for a new data center situated on an industrial megasite near New Florence, Missouri. The project is located south of Interstate 70 within a 5,000-acre site that has been developed as part of a state-funded initiative to attract major industrial investment. The development, which is currently in the early stages, joins an existing Amazon Data Services project already under construction north of the highway. County officials are currently considering a 70% personal property tax abatement for the project, with a formal public hearing scheduled for June 8.
The project stems from a broader county effort to establish shovel-ready industrial land, bolstered by a $5 million federal pandemic recovery grant awarded in 2023. While officials frame the investment as a significant opportunity for local job creation and tax revenue, the development has faced criticism from some residents regarding transparency and the lack of public referendums on the tax incentive agreements. This pushback mirrors similar community concerns regarding data center expansion elsewhere in the state.
Community members in Sarcoxie are organizing to oppose a proposed hyperscale data center park and 2,000-acre solar farm in Jasper and Lawrence counties.
Greater St. Louis hosts a panel to promote data center development in the region, dismissing resident concerns as myths despite ongoing protests in Festus and Midtown St. Louis.
