MidPen Housing Delivers 135-Unit Shirley Chisholm Village for San Francisco Educators

MidPen Housing delivers Shirley Chisholm Village, a 135-unit affordable educator housing project in San Francisco developed in partnership with SFUSD.

By Colin Percy · May 1, 2026

Shirley Chisholm Village has opened in San Francisco as the city's first affordable housing project specifically tailored for educators. Developed by MidPen Housing in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District, the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, and BAR Architects & Interiors, the all-electric community provides 135 units for teachers earning between 40 and 120 percent of the area median income. The project was constructed on a site that previously served as an underutilized parking and storage facility.

Designed to integrate into the surrounding single-family neighborhood, the development features public-facing amenities, including a playground and a 1,562-square-foot clubhouse operated by the nonprofit Children’s After School Arts. The building includes a 1,000-square-foot top-floor lounge, a fitness center, and unit interiors featuring stone countertops and upgraded flooring. The project reflects a strategic use of public land to address workforce housing shortages while meeting community-driven design goals.
