MIDA has approved the Stratos project, a massive 40,000-acre data center campus situated in Box Elder County.
The Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) is moving forward with the Stratos Project, a hyperscale data center development located in an unincorporated area of Box Elder County. The project, which was referred to MIDA by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in January, is intended to support national security goals by leveraging proximity to fiber networks and the Ruby natural gas pipeline. MIDA has already granted approval for the development and intends to establish a design review committee involving county staff to oversee the project.
While MIDA is moving toward public-private partnerships to facilitate the development, the project has faced local opposition. MIDA, an independent state authority formed in 2007, operates with the power to levy taxes and issue bonds, functioning similarly to a local government. The authority has previously overseen other developments, such as the 14.5-acre Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Wasatch County, and currently manages six active project areas across the state.
