The Department of Homeland Security is repurposing an existing 833,000-square-foot warehouse located at 6020 W. 300 South in Salt Lake City into a large-scale immigration detention center. The project, which was acquired for $145.4 million, faces an additional estimated $250 million to $500 million in renovations to meet federal detention standards. The site is intended to house 10,000 detainees, necessitating extensive upgrades to electrical, natural gas, and wastewater infrastructure to support the massive facility, including the potential construction of a dedicated municipal treatment plant.

The proposed facility has drawn significant criticism from local leadership, with Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County officials actively opposing the development. Technical requirements for the site include thousands of plumbing fixtures, a major HVAC overhaul to manage air quality for 10,000 occupants, and a new electrical substation to handle a peak load of 17.3 megawatts. Operational utility costs for the detention center are projected at approximately $16 million annually.
