Mecklenburg County Sheriff Reopening Charlotte Jail North Facility to Relieve Overcrowding

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office plans to reopen the Jail North facility in Charlotte to address historic overcrowding at the Uptown detention center.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has announced plans to bring the north Charlotte detention facility back into operation. The jail, which has remained unused for detention purposes since 2022, is being reopened to mitigate significant overcrowding at the primary Uptown detention center.
