The North Carolina Museum of History in downtown Raleigh is currently undergoing a massive $200 million renovation that has gutted the existing 1994 structure, leaving only the primary steel and concrete skeleton. The project, which is designed to modernize the aging facility and address long-standing maintenance issues like faulty HVAC and roof leaks, will add 40,000 square feet of space to the building. Planned improvements include a new glassed-in entrance and expanded areas for event hosting, school groups, and updated, interactive exhibits.

Work on the site is slated to continue through 2028, with the museum executing a phased reopening that begins in the fall of 2028 and concludes with the remaining galleries in the spring of 2029. While the state has previously appropriated $180 million for the project, officials estimate an additional $31 million is required to complete the construction. Despite current state budget stalemates, project leaders report that enough unspent funds remain to prevent immediate delays.
