Macon County Proposes $68M Budget With Continued Capital Improvement Projects

Macon County Manager Warren Cabe proposes a $68 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that maintains the 27-cent tax rate while addressing various capital improvement projects.

By Colin Percy · May 20, 2026

Macon County Manager Warren Cabe has unveiled a proposed $68 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year, a slight decrease from the previous year's $70 million spending plan. The proposal seeks to maintain the current property tax rate at 27 cents per $100 of assessed value, relying on growth in the tax base and sales tax revenue to stabilize funding. While the plan avoids a tax increase, it falls $7.7 million short of total departmental requests, necessitating budget tightening and the prioritization of essential services.

The proposed budget includes funding allocations for ongoing and future capital improvements, such as the completion of the Carson convenience center and renovations at the National Guard armory and Macon Early College. Additionally, Cabe highlighted potential long-term financing capacity, noting that as debt service obligations decrease by 2045, the county may be positioned to fund major future projects, including a proposed justice center estimated to exceed $50 million.
