ICE Begins $400K Remediation at 418K SF Surprise Detention Facility Following Arson Attempt

A 19-year-old faces federal charges for allegedly attempting to set fire to a Surprise warehouse slated to become a 1,500-bed ICE detention center.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security purchased a 418,400-square-foot warehouse in Surprise to convert into a 1,500-bed detention center. The project, which has faced significant local opposition, was most recently subject to a stop-work order issued in late April, though current filings suggest the order has been lifted.

The facility has become the target of federal arson investigations after a suspect allegedly attempted to set the building on fire in February. While an automated fire suppression system prevented structural destruction, the government reports over $40,000 in immediate repairs and estimates total damage costs could exceed $400,000.
