H-E-B is closing its 1980s-era Austin store on Spicewood Springs Road as the grocer shifts toward developing larger, company-owned retail sites.

H-E-B is shuttering its longtime location at 12860 Research Blvd. in Northwest Austin when its lease expires on July 31. The grocer, which has operated at the site since the early 1980s, stated the closure is part of an ongoing review of its store network and long-term growth strategy. Employees will be offered positions at nearby locations, and the company plans to donate $40,000 to local organizations including Caraway Elementary School and the Spicewood Springs Branch Library.

Simultaneously, the San Antonio-based retailer is continuing a series of renovations across Central Texas. Recent and ongoing projects include a $17.5 million remodel at the Hancock Center in Austin and a $28 million upgrade in Kyle, both of which were slated for completion this spring. Additional interior revamps are underway at stores in Cedar Park and Dripping Springs, each with a reported cost of $250,000.
