Duke University Breaks Ground on $23M Durham Data Center Facility

Duke University plans to build a $23 million data center on its Durham campus to support artificial intelligence and research computing infrastructure.

By Colin Percy · May 21, 2026

Duke University has begun site preparation for a new 1.5-megawatt data center located on a 12-acre parcel along Yearby Avenue at its Central Campus in Durham. The $23 million facility, which received a building permit on April 8, is designed to support the university's researchers and computing needs. While initially scaled at 1.5 megawatts, the project has the potential to expand to 3 megawatts, with completion expected next year.

The project has sparked local debate regarding energy and water consumption, particularly as Durham faces regional drought conditions and recent municipal discussions regarding data center moratoriums. Duke representatives have stated that the facility will integrate with existing utility infrastructure, including a nearby chiller plant, to mitigate environmental impacts and will be exempt from local hyperscale moratoriums due to its educational use and existing permit status.
