Charlotte City Council Weighs 150-Day Halt on New Data Center Construction

Charlotte City Council weighs a 150-day moratorium on new data centers following public outcry over two massive projects currently under construction.

By Colin Percy · May 27, 2026

The Charlotte City Council is evaluating a potential 150-day moratorium on new data center developments following significant community pushback. Opponents of the facilities, citing concerns over water consumption, electricity costs, and environmental impact, held a demonstration and provided testimony during a recent public hearing. The proposed pause would provide the city time to evaluate the impact of hyperscale facilities and potentially revise its Unified Development Ordinance to classify these projects as industrial uses requiring special permits.

Two major facilities are currently in development within the jurisdiction: a 400-megawatt campus by Digital Reality north of Charlotte Douglas Airport and a 300-megawatt project by PowerHouse in University City. Additionally, a smaller expansion project proposed by American Towers on Hood Road has become a focal point of local concerns. The Council is expected to vote on the moratorium on June 8.
