Charlotte Douglas Airport Delays Lease Deal Ahead of $1B Terminal Expansion

Charlotte Douglas International Airport extends its current lease agreement with American Airlines for one year as the facility prepares for $1 billion in terminal expansions.

By Colin Percy · May 22, 2026

Charlotte Douglas International Airport has extended its existing Airline Use and Lease Agreement with American Airlines and other carriers for one year after failing to reach a new long-term pact. The current agreement, which was set to expire, will now run through June 30 of next year. While negotiations remain confidential, the terms will be made public before being presented to the Charlotte City Council for a final vote. American Airlines remains the primary carrier at the facility, operating one of its largest global hubs with approximately 650 daily flights.

The lease negotiation occurs as the city plans a nearly $1 billion investment to modernize and expand the airport. Proposed capital projects include the addition of up to 10 gates on Concourse B and 12 gates on Concourse C. These improvements are critical for the airport, where airlines accounted for roughly $216 million, or 44%, of the facility's $487 million total revenue in the last fiscal year. While some City Council members have faced pressure from labor unions to tie lease terms to private-sector wage mandates, city officials and business leaders have noted that state law prohibits such mandates and emphasized the importance of maintaining stable economic operations at the hub.
