The University of North Florida opens the Perry Weather Heat Lab at Hicks Hall to conduct heat safety research for athletes, military personnel, and workers.
The University of North Florida (UNF) has launched the Perry Weather Heat Lab, a new research facility located at Hicks Hall off First Coast Tech Parkway. Operated in partnership with the Korey Stringer Institute and climate safety platform Perry Weather, the lab utilizes advanced environmental monitoring instrumentation to study the physiological impacts of extreme heat. The facility aims to develop heat acclimation strategies, validate wearable safety devices, and establish occupational heat safety protocols for regional employers.
Key faculty members Michael Szymanski and Gabrielle Brewer have joined the UNF team to oversee the facility's operations. The lab will provide immediate support to the university's Army ROTC cadets and Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, with broader goals to deliver safety guidance for professional athletes and local outdoor workers. The initiative honors the mission of the Korey Stringer Institute, which focuses on preventing exertional heatstroke.
