Two new markets, The Mercantile and Crafty Steere, are set to open this summer in downtown Akron to provide essential goods and dining options.
Downtown Akron is expanding its retail footprint with two new independent markets arriving this summer. The Mercantile Akron, an upscale bodega and micro-grocery, will open in a 2,000-square-foot space at 1 Cascade Plaza. Founders Shane Wynn and Becca Gippin have signed a seven-year lease with an option to expand into an additional 4,000 square feet. The shop will offer grab-and-go meals, sundries, and locally made artisan goods, operating Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Simultaneously, Crafty Steere is opening its third location in the historic O’Neil’s Building. Owner Brian Steere is investing approximately $400,000 to renovate the two-story space, which will feature a market, a full restaurant, and family-friendly entertainment. The facility, located near Lock 3 park, will utilize traditional recipes from the former West Point Market to drive destination foot traffic. Both businesses aim to serve the growing downtown residential population and improve urban walkability.
