Steamboat Springs Transit secures $2.75M in annual funding while managing a fleet of 28 buses and addressing critical upgrades for its aging transit infrastructure.
Steamboat Springs Transit (SST) maintains a robust fare-free transit network serving its mountain community with over one million annual passenger trips. The system operates a fleet of 28 buses and is supported by a workforce of 50 drivers. To ensure long-term stability, the city and Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation finalized a 20-year funding agreement in November 2025, providing $2.75 million in annual support to replace older, less reliable financing models.
Despite high performance metrics, the agency faces significant operational hurdles, including an aging fleet where several buses have exceeded 20 years of service and 800,000 miles. SST is currently working to replace seven end-of-life vehicles while refurbishing others. Additionally, the agency recently completed a 32-bed dormitory-style housing facility to help staff its seasonal workforce, addressing a critical housing barrier for transit employees.
