St. Louis Public Schools board is reviewing plans to demolish three historic school properties at a cost of $2.2 million as the district manages a $31 million budget deficit.
St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) is moving forward with plans to demolish three vacant, historic school buildings: Euclid School in the Fountain Park neighborhood, Hempstead School in the Hamilton Heights area, and Scullin School in Penrose. The district intends to fund the $2.2 million demolition project using insurance proceeds stemming from tornado damage sustained last year. The school board is expected to review the demolition proposals at an upcoming meeting.
Developer Benjamin Anderson has publicly criticized the move, noting that he has attempted to purchase the 133-year-old Euclid School for three years, including a period where the property was under contract. While local preservationists have previously voiced opposition to the plans to raze the historic properties, the district—which currently owns approximately 20 vacant properties—is looking to consolidate assets as it faces a $31 million deficit for 2026.
