Midtown residents are calling for city intervention regarding an abandoned construction site at 1155 Peachtree Street, citing safety concerns over a tower crane that has remained idle for five years.
A stalled office and retail redevelopment at 1155 Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta has drawn scrutiny from local residents, who are petitioning for transparency and the removal of a long-idle crane. The project, which includes a planned 125,000-square-foot expansion to the former BellSouth headquarters, has been under the ownership of developer John Dewberry since 2010. While renovations commenced in 2019, the site currently remains a concrete shell, leaving neighboring residents concerned about the structural integrity of the crane and the prolonged closure of pedestrian walkways along 13th Street.
Local officials and the Georgia Department of Transportation have struggled to determine jurisdictional oversight for the abandoned equipment. Although the City of Atlanta issued a warning regarding insecure fencing at the property, developer representatives maintain the site is locked and the crane is properly positioned for weather conditions. The development, which previously operated under the name The Campanile, faced permit expirations in 2025 with little progress reported beyond facade stripping, prompting community calls for an independent safety review and a remediation timeline.
