The proposed 40,000-acre Status Project in Box Elder County, Utah, moves forward as a massive development involving a new data center, power plant, and residential components.
Developer O'Leary Digital, led by Kevin O'Leary, has unveiled initial architectural renderings for the Stratos Project, a massive 40,000-acre development in unincorporated Box Elder County, Utah. The current proposal envisions a sprawling campus featuring ten 100MW data center buildings, a 1GW natural gas power plant with battery storage, and a 3,000-acre solar array designed to generate 500MW of electricity. The master plan also incorporates a mixed-use innovation district dubbed “Downtown Wonder Valley,” intended to support the local workforce.
The project is in the early planning stages and faces a multi-year approval process involving state and federal environmental reviews, as well as oversight from a newly established MIDA development review committee. While the development expects to create 2,000 jobs, it has faced public scrutiny regarding water usage and environmental impact. Officials from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality indicate that permitting could take at least two years, with significant baseline testing and public hearing requirements still ahead before any building permits can be issued.
