Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and NYCEDC have selected The Peninsula in the Bronx as the site for a new 20,000-square-foot municipal grocery store scheduled to open in 2027.
The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has announced that The Peninsula, a mixed-use redevelopment project in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, will host the city’s second municipal grocery store. The 20,000-square-foot retail space is slated for completion in 2027 and is intended to combat local food insecurity and the ongoing affordability crisis. The initiative, backed by $70 million in capital funding from the Mayor's administration, aims to reduce overhead costs by utilizing city-owned properties and is targeting the launch of five stores across the five boroughs by the end of the Mayor’s first term.
Developed by Gilbane Development and The Hudson Companies at the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Facility site, The Peninsula project includes 740 units of affordable housing, 50,000 square feet of public open space, 30,000 square feet of light industrial space, and 50,000 square feet of community facilities. The city plans to issue a request for proposals this summer to identify private operators for the new grocery location, while simultaneously launching a portal to solicit additional site submissions for future stores in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
