The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission accepted the construction permit application for the KRONOS MMR micro modular reactor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. has reached a significant milestone in its federal licensing process as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) accepted the construction permit application for the KRONOS MMR micro modular reactor. The application, submitted on March 31 in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is now under formal safety, environmental, and technical review. This step allows regulators to begin a detailed evaluation of the project, which is designed as a Generation IV advanced reactor.

While the acceptance does not constitute approval, NANO Nuclear anticipates the review process will conclude in 2027. Pending regulatory clearance, the project could commence construction in the second half of 2027. Beyond this initiative, the company is concurrently advancing supply chain planning and a non-nuclear demonstration unit located in Oak Brook, Illinois.
