Mercedes-Benz Lists 32K SF Long Beach R&D Facility for Sale Following Atlanta Expansion

Mercedes-Benz will close its 32,100-square-foot research facility in Long Beach by December 2026 as it consolidates operations into a new $34 million center in Georgia.

Mercedes-Benz plans to shutter its long-standing research and design facility in Long Beach, California, by the end of 2026. The 32,100-square-foot property, located at 4035 Via Oro Avenue, has served as a hub for technology and powertrain development since 1997 and is currently listed for sale. The closure process begins July 6, with approximately 186 employees affected by the transition.

The consolidation effort directs operations to a new $34 million facility near the company's North American headquarters in Sandy Springs, Georgia. That project is scheduled for completion in August. While some affected staff in Long Beach may be eligible for transfers to Georgia, Ann Arbor, or San Jose, others face layoffs or severance packages.
