Gary/Chicago Airport Secures $10M Federal Funding for New Air Traffic Control Tower

Gary/Chicago International Airport secures a $10M federal grant to construct a new, taller air traffic control tower.

By Colin Percy · May 26, 2026

The Gary/Chicago International Airport has been awarded a $10 million grant through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Contract Tower Program to replace its current air traffic control facility, which has been in service since 1972. The new structure will stand approximately 50 feet taller than the existing tower, a design intended to enhance visibility and operational capacity to better meet the airport's modern aviation and logistics demands.

The project stems from planning efforts initiated in 2022, with the FAA granting formal approval of the Siting Study Report in September 2024. During the construction phase, officials anticipate the project will generate over 23,500 hours of work and create approximately 115 skilled trade jobs. This upgrade is positioned as a key development for Northwest Indiana’s aviation infrastructure.
