Frisco Council Clears Path for Religious Facility Projects Following Zoning Review

Frisco City Council takes no action on three religious facility projects after confirming the Planning and Zoning Commission's administrative approvals remain legally sound.

Following four hours of public comment, the Frisco City Council declined to appeal the administrative site plan and plat approvals for three separate religious facility projects. Mayor Jeff Cheney stated that after consulting with the city attorney, the council found no legal basis to challenge the Planning and Zoning Commission's earlier unanimous or near-unanimous approvals, as the projects met all existing development standards and zoning codes that have been in place for decades.

The three projects include the Islamic Center of Frisco, a temple proposed by Gita Mandir Inc. as part of a 14.8-acre mixed-use development at FM 423 and Lone Star Ranch Parkway, and a temple and community center proposed by the Jain Society of North Texas on 6.6 acres south of Lebanon Road. While residents expressed concerns regarding traffic and safety, city officials confirmed that houses of worship have long been a permitted use under the site's zoning designations. As a resolution to local traffic concerns, the developer of the FM 423 project will close off a previously proposed entrance point that had drawn neighborhood opposition.
