Developer Proposes $1B Casino Resort Redevelopment for Santee Outlet Mall Site

Entrepreneur Wallace Cheves proposes a $1 billion casino and resort complex in Santee, South Carolina, aiming to revitalize an abandoned I-95 outlet mall.

Greenville-based entrepreneur Wallace Cheves is exploring the potential redevelopment of a dilapidated outlet mall in Santee, South Carolina, into a $1 billion casino and resort complex. The proposed project aims to capitalize on high traffic along Interstate 95, with projections estimating the creation of 3,000 direct jobs, an annual influx of over 4 million visitors, and $75 million in annual tax revenue. While the site currently faces significant neglect, the project remains in the conceptual stage, as it would require substantial changes to South Carolina's current anti-gambling legislation.

Cheves, who previously facilitated the development of the Catawba Nation's tribal casino in North Carolina, sees the Santee location as a strategic "stopover" point for travelers between New York and Miami. While the project faces regulatory hurdles, Cheves continues to leverage his background in major developments, including his role as chairman of the Greenville Triumph and the development of a 6,000-seat stadium in Mauldin.
