Denver City Council Halts All New Data Center Permits for One Year

Denver City Council enacts a one-year moratorium on all new data center development to evaluate infrastructure and utility impacts.

By Colin Percy · May 20, 2026

Denver City Council unanimously passed a temporary moratorium on new data center projects on May 18, 2026. This year-long pause applies to all new development proposals and permit applications, allowing city officials time to review zoning codes, sustainability standards, and the long-term impact of high-energy data facilities on local water and power resources.

The measure does not affect data centers currently in operation or projects already under construction, such as the CoreSite facility in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. City leaders intend to utilize the next 12 months to address community concerns regarding infrastructure capacity and compatibility, particularly regarding projects near residential areas and the National Western Center.
