Compass Datacenters Scraps Plans for Two Greensville County Projects Amid Tax Uncertainty

Texas-based Compass Datacenters halts search for two data center sites in Greensville County due to legislative uncertainty regarding Virginia's tax incentive policy.

By Colin Percy · May 22, 2026

Compass Datacenters has abandoned plans to establish two new data center facilities in Greensville County and Emporia, citing legislative instability regarding Virginia’s long-term tax abatement program. State Secretary of Finance Mark Sickles confirmed the withdrawal during a Senate Finance Committee update, noting that the company ceased its site search as the General Assembly remains deadlocked over whether to eliminate data center tax incentives eight years ahead of the scheduled 2035 expiration.
