Columbus City Council voted to amend plans for a new NWSL soccer training facility at McCoy Park, removing 10 acres from the project to address community concerns regarding a disputed site.
Columbus City Council has modified legislation governing the development of a proposed training facility for the city's new National Women’s Soccer League team. The amendment removes approximately 10 acres of land between Greenlawn Avenue and the existing 30-acre McCoy Park from the "Confluence Community Authority" agreement, effectively shrinking the project site to 20 acres for now. The city continues to negotiate with the Younkin family regarding prior commitments for a therapeutic recreation center at 555 Greenlawn Ave., while simultaneously seeking alternative locations for a replacement neighborhood park.
Following the legislative changes, the city amended its contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, reassigning the firm from the redesign of McCoy Park to planning efforts for other sites in the neighborhood. City officials have identified a potential nine-acre parcel between Southwest Freewill Baptist Church and Brown Road as a candidate for new park development. A public hearing regarding the Confluence Community Authority is scheduled for June 24, 2026, with a target date of July 1 for the finalization of agreements between the city, county, and team ownership group, which includes Haslam Sports Group, Nationwide, and Drs. Christine and Pete Edwards.
