Citrus County Commissioners enact a one-year moratorium on new data center projects while allowing a pending 550-acre Deltona Corp. rezoning application to proceed.
Citrus County has implemented a one-year moratorium on the development of data centers to allow for the creation of more restrictive local regulations. The decision follows significant public opposition regarding potential environmental and quality-of-life impacts, including concerns over water usage, electricity consumption, light pollution, and acoustic disturbances. Despite the pause, officials confirmed that a previously filed application by Deltona Corp. will continue through the standard review process.
Deltona Corp. is currently seeking to rezone 550 acres adjacent to the 800-acre Holder Industrial Park to a heavy industrial classification. While the Planning and Development Commission has tabled the request until June 18, the County Commission retains final authority on the application. Attorney Denise Dymond Lyn noted that even if the zoning change is ultimately approved, the moratorium prevents the issuance of any new data center permits during the one-year term.
