Augusta Technical College secures a $6.8M federal grant to advance the $40M Jim Hudson Automotive Institute, a 65,000-square-foot training campus in Augusta.
Augusta Technical College is moving forward with its $40 million Jim Hudson Automotive Institute, a new 65,000-square-foot satellite campus located at the former Johnson Motor Company site on Walton Way in Augusta. The project recently received a $6.8 million grant from the Economic Development Administration to accelerate phase one, which involves renovating approximately half of the 6.4-acre property. Earlier funding for the facility was supported by $1 million contributions each from the Jim Hudson Automotive Group, Augusta National Golf Club, and the Knox Foundation.
The institute is designed to address regional workforce shortages by providing training for internal combustion, electric, hybrid, and diesel engine technologies. While initial projections targeted a late 2025 opening, the project timeline adjusted following a slowdown in private fundraising, leading the college to prioritize the grant-funded completion of phase one. Once operational, the campus will serve as a hub for both new student certifications and continuing education for local automotive service professionals.
