Augusta’s Historic Stone Building Rehabilitation Project Slated for 2027 Completion

The Stone Building, Maine's historic first state mental health institution, is undergoing a multi-phase stabilization project in Augusta set for completion in March 2027.

By Colin Percy · May 22, 2026

The preservation of The Stone Building, a prominent Hallowell granite complex in Augusta, is currently in its third phase of rehabilitation. The project focuses on stabilizing the historic structure, which has faced significant deterioration, including roof collapses and widespread water infiltration, during its two decades of vacancy. Current efforts include the restoration of 50 historic wood windows and the integration of modern energy-efficient replacements where necessary.

The project involves a series of meticulously sequenced phases, starting with structural stabilization, roof replacement, and stone repairs. Subsequent work addressed hazardous materials abatement and interior salvage. The restoration is being guided by engineering firm Gale Associates, with construction and abatement services provided by Benchmark and The RC Group.
