Athens-Clarke County secures a deadline extension for a $25 million federal grant to reimagine North Avenue and prepares for a vote on a $226 million judicial center.
The Federal Highway Administration has granted Athens-Clarke County an extension on a $25 million "road diet" grant originally awarded in 2022, providing officials a second chance to implement safety improvements on North Avenue. The project is expected to revert to a four-lane configuration featuring bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings, moving away from a previously debated five-lane design that risked environmental review delays and complications with right-of-way acquisitions.
Separately, the commission is set to vote on a $148 million bond issuance to address a funding shortfall for a new $226 million, six-story judicial center. While some commissioners have raised concerns regarding the project's total cost and height, project proponents emphasize the necessity of the 200,000-square-foot facility to replace the current, undersized courthouse.
