The proposed judicial center in downtown Athens, Georgia, has seen its projected cost balloon to $226 million, nearly tripling from original expectations. Athens-Clarke County currently faces a $148 million funding gap for the 200,000-square-foot facility, with officials citing inflationary pressures, supply chain disruptions, and global economic volatility as the primary drivers of the cost increase. The project aims to address long-standing space constraints and safety deficiencies in the existing courthouse, incorporating secure inmate transit and dedicated parking.

County officials, including Manager Bob Cowell and Capital Projects Director Josh Hawkins, are evaluating bond issuance through a redevelopment authority to bridge the deficit. Proposed funding strategies involve retirement of debt through future SPLOST initiatives, though officials warned that a failure at the ballot box could necessitate a 2.5-mill property tax increase. The center is planned for the intersection of Dougherty and Lumpkin streets, requiring the relocation of several county departments and the cloning of a historic loblolly pine located on the site.
