Amazon is expanding its footprint in southern New Castle County by acquiring two adjacent tracts of farmland in Middletown for $207 million. The tech giant plans to construct two robotic-centric operations facilities on the site, a move that could quadruple its existing regional footprint. Land-use attorney Richard Forsten previously indicated to the Middletown Town Council that the proposed buildings will feature robotics similar to those at the company's fulfillment center at the former General Motors plant on Boxwood Road.

While Amazon has not provided a specific construction timeline, the project has drawn significant local attention due to the scale of the investment and the potential for increased automation. Projections shared with the town council suggest the two facilities could bring approximately 1,500 jobs to the area. The expansion has sparked mixed community reactions, with some residents praising the economic investment and others citing concerns regarding traffic, land use, and the potential displacement of human labor by robotics.
